Have a competitive side? Put it to work for you and your walking routine.

  • Make a game of it. Challenge a friend, coworker, or significant other to a walk-off. Partnering with someone else holds you both accountable and adds an element of competitive fun to your routine.

  • Track it. Determine whether you’ll measure the number of steps, miles, or total time walking. Track your results daily, but check in with each other to compare results just once or twice/week. Not knowing how successful your “opponent” has been keeps you motivated to do your personal best and push a little harder.

  • Reward your work. Set a date for the end of your challenge and schedule a reward. Prizes for the winning walker might include a healthy lunch out, new water bottle, nutrient-packed smoothie — or simply bragging rights.
