When you think of childhood summers, do you remember balmy nights chasing fireflies, walking barefoot on hot sand, and hours of fun that didn’t cost a bit of money? Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean you have to spend a ton to celebrate this amazing season. Try these ways to enjoy summer for next to nothing:

  • Attend a free music festival. Even if you don’t consider it your style of music, there’s something about being outside and basking in the sun while surrounded by happy people. Check out your local listings and get your picnic basket ready.

  • Look up to the stars. If your astronomy knowledge is limited to the Big and Little Dippers, get a star map or download a chart of the heavens, lie back on a blanket, and enjoy a thoroughly ancient activity.

  • Wade in with a canoe. Rent or borrow a canoe, pack a delicious lunch, and paddle with friends for an afternoon. A great arm workout, cold drinks, and camaraderie create a hard combination to beat.
