If you’re not one of the 55% of Americans who favor mornings, here are some suggestions for launching your day more gracefully:

  • Rehydrate. Going several hours without water, even if you’re sleeping, causes some dehydration. Drink a glass of water right after you wake up to help fire your metabolic processes, sending energy to your brain and extremities.

  • Let in some natural light. Open your blinds or drapes to welcome in natural light. You’re likely to feel some immediate invigoration as your biological clock responds.

  • Play music. Listen to your favorite music — from breezy Hawaiian to heavy metal — to shake off a grumpy mood, boost vigor, release tension, and psych yourself up for the day. Hit the start button when you jump out of bed, or better yet, set your alarm so that you wake up to your top picks.

  • Stretch. Even a few minutes of stretching can help redistribute blood flow, carrying vital nutrients and oxygen to your muscles and brain. Stretching stimulates mental clarity as well as physical mobility.
