Healthy eating often becomes a focus when you’re trying to lose weight, train for an athletic event, or meet another goal. But good nutrition isn’t just for now and then. When you eat healthfully every day, your body will reward you with more energy and a brighter outlook.

Take a fresh look at your eating habits:

  • How many servings of fruits and vegetables do you have each day? Most people don’t eat enough produce (at least 3 vegetable and 2 fruit 1-cup servings/day). If five a day seems like a lot, check out what a serving is — it may not be as big as you think. If you’re watching calories, you may want to limit your servings of beans, starchy vegetables (like potatoes, yams, peas, squash, taro, and corn), and juices to 3/day.

  • Are you getting enough whole grains? You may have grown up with white bread and white rice, but they’re nearly void of nutrition. Make the switch to whole grains for more nutrients and better health.

  • Are you eating lean protein? Avoid fattier meats, or eat them only occasionally. Instead, opt for turkey, chicken, fish, and lean cuts of beef. Vegetarian meals, with lots of protein-filled beans, are also a great alternative.

  • Are you getting your calcium? Dairy is a great source of this important nutrient, but spinach, soy beans, sardines, and salmon are also good ways to get your daily dose of calcium.

When you choose nutritious, health-promoting foods, you’ll feel a difference in your energy level and overall well-being.
