All Fruit Is Not Created Equal - Friday, March 15
While it’s all good for you, fruits can be categorized by seasonality and nutrients; it pays to take notice of both. Keep these tips in mind for saving money and maximizing nutrition:
Thick or thin. The type of skin on your fruit dictates how long it will keep on your counter. A good rule is to eat thin-skinned items like plums and peaches before thicker skinned fruits like bananas, mangos, and citrus.
Colorful choices. Pay attention to color; fruits of various hues tend to be rich in different vitamins and minerals.
Timing is everything. Blueberries are likely to taste better in July and August than in January. Depending on the time of year, the fruit you choose may have to travel across the country before it gets to your table. By buying in-season, you get a fresher product with higher nutrients.
Spend a little more time in the produce section this week and pick out a new fruit to try. If your favorites aren’t in season, buy frozen (with no sugar added).
