While you may not think of bird watching as a traditional sport, there are many reasons to explore this activity. If you’re looking for a new way to be physically active, a guided bird walk could add some interest. You’ll enjoy the great outdoors, breathe in the fresh air, and feel at one with nature. Many preserves, sanctuaries, and parks offer walks where you can learn about the different species. Here are some tips:

  • Learn about native birds and try to locate as many as you can
  • Carry binoculars for spotting birds at a distance and a note pad to write down things of interest
  • Bring the family along and see who finds the rarest type
  • Keep the weather in mind, as well as the season — this can make a difference if you’re looking for specific birds.

Great bird watching locations are everywhere, including the city and the country. You never know what may fly your way, so keep your eyes and ears open. For more information, visit the American Birding Association website.
