Hobby Habit - Thursday, January 04
Participating in a pastime is more than an opportunity for some R and R — it can actually release stress, invigorate the immune system, and stimulate your mind. Get involved in your own amateur venture with these tips:
Budget for costs. Make sure your checking account supports your passion so paying for it doesn’t bump up your stress. But don’t think all hobbies drain your wallet — some are nearly free. Check out a library book on bird watching and head out for a nature walk, buy a constellation map and gaze upon the cosmos, or make leis from whatever grows in your backyard.
Find education opportunities. Check out your local community center for classes in everything from woodworking to scrapbooking. Or visit a hobby shop for ideas, books, and short seminars on craft projects, often offered at no cost. Many utility companies and home improvement stores offer free workshops on things like landscaping tips and carpentry.
Consider active hobbies. Double up on the health benefits by getting involved in a physical activity. Hiking trails on your local park map, ballroom dancing, orchid gardening, boogie boarding, even golf all qualify… provided you walk the greens instead of renting a cart.
