Wise Shopping Moves - Friday, April 05
Create a smart supermarket strategy to get the most for your money and prepare healthful meals on a budget. Put the cart before the take-out with these savvy shopper tips to benefit your budget and your body:
Use store promotions to help design your meal plan for the week, focusing on produce that’s both in season and on sale. Keep up on special offers from individual stores. Some will accept competitor coupons or multiply your manufacturer coupons, while others will price match if you bring in the weekly ads.
Make a list that follows the store’s layout to avoid zigzagging. The healthiest foods often line the perimeter while the less nutritious chow is lumped into the center. If you find yourself frequently in the core of the store, you’re probably tossing too many processed foods into your basket.
Try generic brands. Many contain the same ingredients as their commercial counterparts — but look at labels to be sure. Even slight variations in sugar content or additives can change the flavor and nutrition value of a product.
Pay attention at the checkout counter for scanning errors. If you catch a mistake, take your receipt to the customer service counter — some stores will discount the item or even give it to you for free.
