Local Athletes - Thursday, August 29
From canoe paddling races to golf and everything between, watching competitive sports can inspire you to improve fitness and try something new. Here are some ideas to be an athlete in your own backyard:
Make a splash. Check your local pool schedule, pack your suit and towel, and head out the door. Try laps, diving, synchronized swimming, or even water polo.
Run for fun. 10K or 5K events are a fun way to commit to a goal that will keep you training. As you run errands around your hometown, keep an eye out for posters advertising upcoming fun runs/walks and sign up. Or visit an online road race calendar, such as roadracerunner.com.
Take a ride. Dust off your bicycle, put on your helmet, and enjoy the ride. Go with friends and family to a local trail for a change of scenery or ride with a bicycle club.
Be a joiner. Explore physical activity opportunities at local park and recreation areas or community colleges. Many offer a variety of classes and events to interest folks of all ages, levels, and experience, including weight training, stretching, yoga, dancing, and team sports.
Take a moment to look around… you won’t have to go too far from home for ways feeling good, having fun, and experiencing better health.
