Add a dash of excitement to your fitness program by signing up for a fun run or walk, bicycle race, or multi-sport event — check out Active.com or your parks and recreation department for local events.

Depending on your current physical activity level, pick an event 1-3 months out — plenty of time to get ready. Better yet, get a friend to sign up and train with you to motivate and energize your workouts.

  • Make a pledge. Once you submit your entry form and fee, you’re tasked with getting ready by race day.

  • Visualize success. Knowing that each workout is preparing you for the big event allows you to sweat with a new sense of purpose — you want to cross the finish line feeling good.

  • Take a bow. You’ll complete the event, exhausted and exhilarated, with a unique sense of accomplishment. You made it happen — be proud!

Don’t worry about coming in last. Train hard, race smart, and you’ll finish with your pride intact — and a smile that will light up a stadium.
