Improved mental health is a typical bonus of exercise, but there’s an ancient discipline specifically designed to unfurl both advantages. With origins in Hinduism and Buddhism, yoga — which means “unite” — combines breathing techniques, meditation, and body position to achieve well-being and a sense of peace. Strike a pose and breathe in these yoga fundamentals:
There are plenty of good reasons for yoga’s sustained popularity. It’s associated with: improved quality of life; less stress; relief from anxiety, depression, and insomnia; better physical fitness, strength, and flexibility.
Don’t be intimidated by the intricate bends and alien chants of advanced students, who are known as yogis. As a newcomer, you’ll build strength, balance, and flexibility at your own pace, starting with beginner classes. Immersing yourself in the spiritual side of yoga isn’t required to net the physical gains.
Many styles are practiced today. Seek one that matches your fitness level and goals. Before committing to a studio or teacher, ask friends for recommendations or observe a class.
Keep in mind that while certification isn’t required, nonprofit groups like the Yoga Alliance ensure that registered instructors complete at least 200 hours of training. If you have health concerns, consult your doctor before beginning.
