Would you like to inject more energy into your pace? Adjust your posture for maximum propulsion with these tips:

  • Think relaxed, but military. This might seem like an oxymoron, but you’ll get used to it. Straighten your spine, look forward, keep your chin level and your head up, but let your shoulders relax.

  • Control your arm swing. Swing your arms from front to back — not side to side — while cupping your hands gently and bending your arms at a slightly less than 90 degree angle. As your arms move faster, your legs will do the same.

  • Shorten your stride. Take smaller, quicker steps to go faster. Rolling from your heel through the ball of your foot, use your calf muscles to spring forward.

  • Breathe deeply. Practice deep, rhythmic breaths as you stride to get the maximum oxygen into your body. Expect your breathing to quicken, but you don’t want to be out of breath.
