This time of year, there’s a winter wonderland of outdoor fun available — and lots of invigorating ways to stay active. Go get some sunlight, breathe in the crisp air, and consider these popular winter games…

  • Skiing: This great cardio exercise works the entire body. It’s also a perfect stress reliever, as you’ll connect with nature and get a natural, exercise-induced mood boost. Proper stretching, technique, and equipment are musts, though.

  • Cross-country skiing: More low impact than downhill skiing, this version provides a full-body workout and improves posture. While navigating the scenic winter terrain, keep an eye out for woodland creatures.

  • Snowboarding: You’ll need strong leg muscles to succeed in this extreme sport. Be sure to stick to your skill level and wear the right helmet and padding.

  • Ice skating: Generally a low-impact exercise, skaters increase strength in their hips, hamstrings, and quadriceps while improving flexibility and agility.

No matter what winter sport you choose, remember to stay hydrated. Your thirst indicators may not be as evident as in warmer months.
