Get Unplugged - Thursday, December 11
While technology grants instant, convenient connectivity, it also contributes to chaos. To unwind and regroup, try unplugging from daily cell and cyber distractions.
Designate periodic blackouts. If you can’t bring yourself to power down completely, consider scaling back. Pick a peace day — or at least a few hours — when you commit to letting calls go to voicemail, closing up the inbox, or signing off social media. While these tools are designed to increase productivity, you may be surprised how much more you get done without their constant distractions.
Avoid multitasking. Checking email or texting while on another call or in a meeting doesn’t save time — it splits attention. Leave your electronic devices in your bag while driving, having a meal, or working on a project. You’ll not only maintain proper etiquette, you’ll also be more focused on the task at hand.
Enforce limits and announce them publicly. Determine how often you’ll check messages, then indicate those times in your email signature and voicemail message. Inform friends, family, and coworkers that you prefer not to receive forwarded emails, especially at work. Avoid setting your homepage to news sites. Without the headlines, you’ll be less tempted to surf.
